Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka

Margarethe is an Austrian-German double bass player, sound artist and researcher. After studies in classical orchestral music she specialized in contemporary music, studying with Klangforum Wien and Uli Fussenegger. Besides working with numerous ensembles for new music, she is one of the founding members and co-dramaturg of Schallfeld Ensemble, a contemporary chamber music collective based in Graz. She enjoys working in collectives and collaborations with artists from different art forms such as literature, theatre, film, dance, radio art and media art and is a member of the Rundfunkorchestra, Styrian Improvisers Orchestra, Duo zwei, and founder of the Graz Theremin orchestra (2016-2020). Her compositions for film and radio have been featured at festivals worldwide, such as Esch Radio Art Zone, Diagonale film festival, DocLisboa. As an improviser, her playing is characterized by a sensitivity for sounds and polyphonies, deep listening and a strong physical presence in performance. She likes to work with electronics and objects to explore the sonic and spatial possibilities of her instrument.
Besides being active as performer, Margarethe also works as music journalist and researcher. She is host and contributor for several radio shows that feature contemporary music and sound art, and is frequently writing for music magazines positionen Berlin, sounding future and nmz. She also teaches in universities and has been part in several artistic research projects on music theatre and musical interdisciplinarity. Her PhD is being published at wolke Verlag.

In her non-musical life she is a tech geek and works in IT for open source software projects.
